Description: The course is intended to provide adults from a non-English speaking background with the English language skills and the socio-cultural knowledge needed to enhance their access to, and successful participation in, study at post-Year 12 level.

Successful completion of this course will enhance access to and participation in study at post-Year 12 level by the development of academic literacy and by the development of proficiency in English which is described at Level 3+ on the International Second Language Proficiency Ratings (ISLPR) scale. The ISLPR scale refers to this level as Basic ’Vocational’ Proficiency Plus.

The competencies will enable a person from a Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE) with this qualification to:

- apply their knowledge of English to a wide variety of academic contexts and scenarios
- apply their knowledge of western academic traditions to a wide variety of academic contexts and scenarios
- take responsibility for their own progress with minimal support.

Successful completion of this course provides proof of proficiency in English to be considered for a place at many Australian universities. 
Entry requirements: Senior Secondary Certificate or equivalent.

The course is designed for students with minimum English language proficiency of International Second Language Proficiency Ratings (ISLPR) 3, or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 5.5 to 6. 
Learning pathways: Completion of this course may enhance entry opportunities to courses requiring Year 12 entry, which includes Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses and university study.

Career opportunities: Career paths available to graduates of Certificate IV in English for Academic Purposes include:

This course will provide you with the English Language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) plus research skills and digital literacy to undertake study at an academic level. On successful completion you will receive Certificate IV in English for Academic Purposes. This is a one semester course.

Your learning commitment (known as volume of learning) for this qualification is a minimum of 342 hours. This includes approximately 340 hours of face to face training.
You will need to allocate the remaining hours to engage in a range of activities to support your learning which may include;
• Independent study
• Work placement or simulated workplace activities
• Research and projects
• Preparation of assessment tasks
• Field/industry visits
• Tutorials
• Learning support

This is a Certificate IV level course. Skills to study effectively include research and interpretation of information, referencing, time management and ability to work on projects and or in a team.
