Description: This qualification reflects the role of skilled surveying technicians. These people hold advanced surveying skills, and perform duties involving the performance of precise measurements and setting out structures using specialised surveying equipment.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply in some States where cadastral and mining surveying must be undertaken under the supervision of a registered surveyor. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements.

This qualification is suitable for an Australian apprenticeship pathway.

Your learning commitment (known as the volume of learning) for this qualification is a minimum of 1400 hours. This includes approximately 648of face to face training. You will need to allocate the remaining hours to engage in a range of activities to support your learning which may include;

• Preparation of assessment tasks
• Field/industry visits
• Tutorials
• Learning support

Required student skills:
This is a Diploma level course. Skills required include essay writing and referencing, typing skills, computer literacy, reading and analysing material and resources, problem solving, the ability to be a self- direct learner, advanced communication skills and manage time effectively

This offering is for those who have completed both the Certificate III in Surveying and Spatial Information Services and also the Certificate IV in Surveying or clearly possess the equivalent skills, knowledge and experience. All applicants need to be able to prove that they are currently working in industry full time and have access to an on site mentor before they will be able to enrol. Learners should be aware that there is a heavy component of web and digital based learning and assessment in this delivery mode, as well as a lot of evidence collection from the workplace.

If you don’t already have a USI, you can easily create one at https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-your-usi. Once you have your USI, you can add TAFE Illawarra to your USI account via the Manager Permissions page on the USI website. Recognition is the process by which you can demonstrate you already have the skills or competencies taught in a unit or qualification.
