Description: The Diploma of Civil Construction Design reflects the role of personnel working as designers or design para-professionals who support professional engineers. They perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy and requiring the application of significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment/roles/techniques for themselves and others. They are required to develop site specific work designs to ensure the implementation of the clients site requirements. They demonstrate the application of a broad range of technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills.

About: On campus attendance is required for two evenings per week, Monday and Wednesday from 5pm to 9pm for a maximum of 72 attendance weeks. First day of attendance is Monday the 12th of February 2018 at 5pm. Meeting location is Block I, Level 2 room 5 (I205) at Wollongong TAFE Campus. Please note the attendance may vary.

Students will be required to purchase the Australian Standard for Civil Engineering students which costs approximately $140. All students will be required to bring basic stationery including a scientific calculator and will also need to bring Personal Protective Equipment incluidng safety boots, a broad brimmed hat and a long sleeve high visability shirt.

Volume of Learning:
Your learning commitment (known as the volume of learning) for this qualification is a minimum of 1450 hours. This includes approximately 972 hours of face to face training. You will need to allocate the remaining hours to engage in a range of activities to support your learning which may include;
• Independent study
• Work placement or simulated workplace activities
• Research and projects
• Preparation of assessment tasks
• Field/industry visits
• Tutorials
• Learning support


This is a Diploma level course. Skills required include essay writing and referencing, typing skills, computer literacy, reading and analysing material and resources, problem solving, the ability to be a self- direct learner, advanced communication skills and manage time effectively

This offering is for those that have completed the Certificate IV in Civil Construction Design. Preference is given to those that have studied the previous qualifications at TAFE Illawarra Wollongong Campus.

If you don’t already have a USI, you can easily create one at https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-your-usi. Once you have your USI, you can add TAFE Illawarra to your USI account via the Manager Permissions page on the USI website. Recognition is the process by which you can demonstrate you already have the skills or competencies taught in a unit or qualification. It is the recognition of the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained through previous studies, work and life in general. Put simply, it means if you can demonstrate you already have the skills and experience you can complete a part or a whole qualification without needing to attend classes.

There are two types of Recognition:
• Credit Transfer, which allows you to receive credit for unit/s of competency previously successfully completed.
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which is an assessment process of your previous skills, knowledge and experience to meet the requirements of the course you are enrolled.
