Description: A set of skills to equip individuals in hygienic practices and handling food safely during the storage, preparation, display, service, and disposal of food.

Pathways Information Achievement of this unit provides credit towards qualifications in tourism, travel, hospitality, events, holiday parks and resorts in the SIT Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Training Package.

Licensing/Regulatory Information Certification requirements apply at a state and territory level to individuals involved in food handling or supervision. Certification in some States relies on the achievement of SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety and SITXFSA002 Participate in safe food handling practices.

Food safety legislative and knowledge requirements may differ across borders. Those developing training to support the SITXFSA001 and SITXFSA002 units must consult the relevant state or territory food safety authority to determine any accreditation arrangements for courses, trainers and assessors. 
Entry requirements: There are no entry requirements for this qualification 
Career opportunities: This skill set is for food handling personnel or food safety supervisors working in tourism, hospitality and catering organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises, and smaller food preparation or bar areas.

About: This qualification provides you with the skills and knowledge to be competent as a qualified Food Safety Supervisor in the Hospitality Industry.

Learners require intermediate computer skills and access to a commercial kitchen to complete this course succcessfully. Learners will be required to video themselves in some practical activities and may need to purchase food safety equipment not provided by their workplace eg probe thermometer. Learners who have not worked in food preparation activities before and who do not require the qualification to act as a Food Safety Supervisor should consider completing the SITSS00050 Food Handler course.

Food Act 2003 (NSW) requires certain food businesses in the NSW hospitality and retail food service sector to have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS).
All participants enrolling in to this course will require a Unique Student Identifier (USI) - To obtain, please go to: www. usi.gov.au

This course contains nationally recognised units of competency - SITXFSA001, SITXFSA002 The course commences when you receive your online learning materials from your teacher/assessor. On confirmation of your enrolment, your teacher/assessor will email you with the Assessment Guidelines and the Online Access Instructions. Any request for student Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will need to be assessed on the first day. Original documents will be required to proceed with RPL.

The cost of this course is $240. This includes the Food Safety Certificate issued by TAFE NSW.

Required Student Skills: Intermediate Computer skills and access to a Commercial Kitchen is required.

TAFE NSW reserves the right to cancel a course if there are insufficient numbers and will endeavour to give participants as much notice as possible. Cancellations should be advised in writing more than 7 days prior to commencement of the course to be eligible for a full refund. For cancellations advised within 7 days of the course no refund will be made however a substitute delegate may attend. If a substitute delegate is to attend you must contact us before the course commences. There are no fee exemptions available for commercial courses. Course fees cannot be refunded to participants who are unable to attend for reasons beyond TAFE NSW control. Comments: This is a distance learning course delivered online. The course commences when you receive your online learning materials from your teacher/assessor. On confirmation of your enrolment, your teacher/assessor will email you with the Assessment Guidelines and the Online Access Instructions. Participants are required to have intermediate computer skills. This course is offered for candidates already working in the food industry and who may be nominated as a Food Safety Supervisor in the Food Business. Food Safety Supervisors are required to re-certify their qualification every 5 years.

Recognition:
Recognition is the process by which you can demonstrate you already have the skills or competencies taught in a unit or qualification. It is the recognition of the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained through previous studies, work and life in general. Put simply, it means if you can demonstrate you already have the skills and experience you can complete a part or a whole qualification without needing to attend classes.

There are two types of Recognition:
• Credit Transfer, which allows you to receive credit for unit/s of competency previously successfully completed.
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which is an assessment process of your previous skills, knowledge and experience to meet the requirements of the course you are enrolled.
