Description: Before you enrol in this course you must contact the campus or campuses of your choice for details of information sessions and other procedures that may apply.

This course is for those want to work as an air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanic.

You will learn how to select components, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain refrigeration systems and equipment that apply to food storage and preservation, air conditioning and air distribution equipment in buildings and premises.

The Certificate III in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration qualification meets PART of the requirements for issue of a ’Qualified Supervisors Certificate -
Refrigeration and/or Air Conditioning’ issued by NSW Fair Trading, which permits the holder to work unsupervised on refrigeration and/or air-conditioning systems and associated electrical work and to directly supervise others undertaking this work. The course also includes regulatory requirements for purchasing and handling refrigerants.

Note: The Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Legislation Amendment Bill 2003 apply to this qualification. 
Entry requirements: There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

However, the Electrotechnology Training Package recommends typical language, literacy and numeracy skill levels needed to successfully complete each Competency Standard Unit undertaken within this qualification.

Learners should either be in relevant employment or have access to appropriate simulated workplace environments to achieve the completion requirements of this qualification. 
Learning pathways: Completion of this qualification, with appropriate elective units, can provide credit towards one of the following:
- Certificate IV in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Servicing;
- Certificate IV in Air-conditioning Systems Energy Management and Control;
- Certificate IV in Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Systems.

This course is available for people employed as an Apprentice and currently working in a related industry area.

You will need to provide a copy of your signed Training Plan which you will receive from your Australian Apprenticeships Centre representative.

You will learn the basic foundations and content to develop the skills and knowledge used in the «NAME» industry to efficiently produce quality work.
You will also learn about safe work practices and about the context of the Air-conditioning and Refrigeration industry.
This qualification consists of 25 of core units and 2 to 4 of electives depending on student work requirements.

Your learning commitment for this qualification is a minimum of 675 supervised hours There is an expectation that you will engage in a range of activities to support your supervised learning which may include:
• Independent study
• Work placement or simulated workplace activities
• Research and projects
• Preparation of assessment tasks
• Field/industry visits
• Tutorials
• Learning support


Required student skills

This is a Certificate III level course. Skills to study effectively include the ability to work on projects and or in a team, research information, follow instructions and communicate effectively.

Selection criteria: Learners must be employed as an apprentice air-conditioning and refrigeration apprentice and be registered with The Australian Apprenticeshipe Centre (AAC) to be admitted into this course. Evidence of your apprenticeship and employment must be provided.

Other information: To be eligible for this course you must be an indentured apprentice and have a signed training Plan.

Students will need to supply all PPE (steel cap boots, safety glasses, cotton drill long pants and shirt) 
Comments: You will be contacted by the teaching section regarding the time and date of an induction session, you will receive a timetable and more information about your first class, dress code and what to bring. Location will be in Building Q, Wollongong Campus. The candidate will be required only to purchase notebooks for creation of a personal journal. This may be used as an aid when doing formative assessments. To attend this qualification you will need to provide and wear your own personal protective equipment during lessons. The approximate course cost for will be $590. Australia Standards and Regulations. A hard copy of Australian Standard and Regulations are required for class activities. AS-NZS 3000. Buy book pre-printed $160 or download from internet and print at your own cost.

Recognition is the process by which you can demonstrate you already have the skills or competencies taught in a unit or qualification. It is the recognition of the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained through previous studies, work and life in general. Put simply, it means if you can demonstrate you already have the skills and experience you can complete partial or a whole qualification without needing to attend classes.

There are two types of Recognition:
• Credit Transfer, which allows you to receive credit for unit/s of competency previously successfully completed.
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which is an assessment process of your previous skills, knowledge and experience to meet the requirements of the course you are enrolled.
