Description: This course is intended to provide participants with the following general education outcomes:

10727NAT Certificate I in Spoken and Written English is a component of the Certificates in Spoken and Written English (CSWE), English as an additional language (EAL) curriculum framework. It is a beginner course for learners who have just started learning English and who may have had minimal exposure to the language. It provides English language learning for EAL learners, primarily targeting newly arrived migrants and refugees who need to develop language skills to participate in a limited range of contexts. Other groups who benefit from this course include international students, long-term migrants and Aboriginal students. The certificate includes elective numeracy modules for those EAL learners who may also need to develop numeracy skills.

This course is intended to provide participants with the following general education outcomes:

• learning skills to enter formal learning environments
• English language proficiency at the equivalence of International Second Language Proficiency Ratings (ISLPR®) 1+, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 4 or Common European Framework (CEFR) A2+
• English language proficiency to meet some performance features of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) 1 indicators. 
Entry requirements: Learners entering this course are identified as beginner learners of English language.
The recommended entry point against the ISLPR® scale is 1- across the four macroskills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The recommended entry point against the ACSF is Pre-Level B. 
Learning pathways: There are no formalised articulation arrangements in place for this qualification. 
Support for students: TAFE NSW has a range of support services available including support for students with disabilities, extensive library and information services, career advice and counselling, children's centres and support for multicultural or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
