Description: This qualification reflects the role of remedial massage therapists who work with clients presenting with soft tissue dysfunction, musculoskeletal imbalance or restrictions in range of motion (ROM). Practitioners may be self-employed or work within a larger health service.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 200 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

1. NSW HEALTH

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
• Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements;
• Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
• Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

2. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

3. COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES

Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of Children’s Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. Visit:

4. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

Register your interest via TAFE NSW's Facebook page HERE This program is for people who have not completed HLT42015 Certificate IV in Massage Therapy. People who have not completed HLT42015 are required to complete a two year full time program of study to achieve all of the units of competence contained in HLT52015.

The Diploma of Remedial Massage provides successful graduates with the opportunity to obtain Professional Association Membership, Practitioner Insurance and Health Fund Rebates. There may be additional days depending upon the number of students and the timetable may change in the second year to accommodate advanced studies.

Required student skills:
This is a Diploma level course. Skills required include essay writing and referencing, typing skills, computer literacy, reading and analysing material and resources, problem solving, the ability to be a self- direct learner, advanced communication skills and manage time effectively

Learner Support:
If you think you might need help with choosing, enrolling in or completing your course check out the TAFE Illawarra support-for-learners website. You will be able to complete self-assessment checklists, find specialist information and locate the contact details of staff to help with your individual needs.

This course requires extensive study of health sciences including anatomy, physiology and pathology. You should be able to demonstrate competent English and comprehension to at least level 3 as determined by ’Are You Ready’ assessment or evidence of completion of an Australian Higher School Certificate. You will be required to work with members of the public and be massaged by classmates who may be of a different gender and age. You may be required to obtain a working with children and or a criminal records check. Applicants who have completed HLT42015 CIV in Massage Therapy will enter directly into the second year of the Diploma of Remedial Massage and complete their studies in November 2018.

If you do apply for a VET Student Loan you will need to have your Tax File Number (TFN) handy. Fee explanatory text: This training is subsidised by the NSW Government, and as a result your fee is determined through Training Services NSW formal eligibility criteria. This criteria will determine your exact fee. Students who meet additional specified criteria, may be eligible for a fee exemption. In claiming the exemption students will be required to supply the required evidence to support the claim in accordance with the requirements of Smart and Skilled eligibility.

A VET student loan may be available to eligible students to cover some or all of their courses fees. More information will be provided when you enrol.
