Description: This course is for people employed as apprentice mechanical fitters and machinists in the manufacturing, engineering and related industry areas. You will gain the competencies required to work as a mechanical tradesperson in these areas.

You will acquire skills and knowledge in workplace communication, occupational health and safety, quality procedures, systems and planning, engineering measurement, computations and computer technology plus some industry-specific skills in mechanical fitting and machining that are relevant to your current or intended employment.

The course duration will vary depending on the training pathway agreed to between you, your employer and the TAFE college. 
Entry requirements: There is no qualification entry requirement. It is assumed that the learner is engaged as an apprentice under a Training Contract and that the learner is receiving appropriate structured on-the-job training while undertaking this qualification.

This qualification may be accessed by direct entry.

Credit may be granted towards this qualification by those who have completed MEM10105 Certificate I in Engineering, MEM10205 Certificate I in Boating Services, MEM20105 Certificate II in Engineering, MEM20205 Certificate II in Engineering - Production Technology or other relevant qualifications. Credit towards this qualification may also include units of competency contained within relevant skill sets and Statements of Attainment.

Pathways from the qualification

Further training pathways from this qualification include MEM40105 Certificate IV in Engineering and MEM50105 Diploma of Engineering - Advanced Trade or other relevant qualifications. 
Career opportunities: Mechanical tradesperson (traditionally referred to as Fitting and Machining Tradesperson) at level C10 under the Metal, Engineering and Associated Industries Award.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Policy: Students are required to supply and wear PPE. This includes safety boots, cotton drill trousers, long sleeve shirt and safety glasses.

Fee explanatory text: This training is subsidised by the NSW Government, and as a result your fee is determined through Training Services NSW formal eligibility criteria. In claiming the concession or exemption, students will be required to supply the required evidence to support the claim in accord with the requirements of Smart and Skilled eligibility.

To activate your eligibility you must pay the student fee component PRIOR to commencement of the learning activity.

You may be eligible for the Fee Free Apprenticeship which will be verified at enrolment.
