||This qualification reflects the role of individuals employed as beauty therapists to provide a broad range of beauty therapy treatments and services including facial treatments, body massage and treatments, hair removal, lash and brow treatments, nail and make-up services. This includes consultation with clients to provide beauty advice, recommend beauty treatments and services, and sell retail skin-care and cosmetic products.
These individuals work relatively autonomously, and are accountable for personal outputs. Their work involves the self-directed application of knowledge and skills with substantial depth in some areas where judgement is required in planning and selecting appropriate equipment, services and techniques.
Work is typically conducted in beauty salons and spas.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

WH&S requirements for classes: You must wear closed in protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry.
You will be required to provide clients for some of your practical classes and assessments. Clients must be 18 years of age or over.
You will be required to purchase your own:
USB for class and Learner Resources - $15 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) & Lab Coat $60 - $80
You will be required to purchase a textbook - Approximate cost $150 Compulsory Makeup Kit –approximate price $350 - $400 - Required for semester 2. Your teacher will discuss the kit with you in Semester 2.
Total approximate student costs are $650
Volume of Learning:
Your learning commitment (known as the volume of learning) for this qualification is a minimum of 1200 hours. This includes approximately 640 of face to face training. You will need to allocate the remaining hours to engage in a range of activities to support your learning which may include;
- Independent study
- Work placement or simulated workplace activities
- Research and projects
- Preparation of assessment tasks
- Field/industry visits
- Learning support

|Applying and enrolling:
Before you enrol you must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you don’t already have a USI, you can easily create one at https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-your-usi. Once you have your USI, you can add TAFE Illawarra to your USI account via the Manager Permissions page on the USI website. You will need to enter these details when adding us: code: 90006, name: TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute. If you do apply for a VET Student Loan you will need to have your Tax File Number (TFN) handy. If you do not have a TFN you can apply for one through most Australia Post outlets, and obtain a Certificate of Application for a TFN. Once you receive your TFN from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) you must contact your college so they can arrange for you to enter it into your VET Student Loan application.

Any request for student Recognition of Prior Learning and evidence will be assessed on the first day - original documents will be required.
Recognition is the process by which you can demonstrate you already have the skills or competencies taught in a unit or qualification. It is the recognition of the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained through previous studies, work and life in general. Put simply, it means if you can demonstrate you already have the skills and experience you can complete a part or a whole qualification without needing to attend classes.
There are two types of Recognition:
• Credit Transfer, which allows you to receive credit for unit/s of competency previously successfully completed.
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which is an assessment process of your previous skills, knowledge and experience to meet the requirements of the course you are enrolled.
