Description: This qualification reflects the role of instructors who perform a range of activities and functions within the fitness industry. Depending on the specialisation chosen, this qualification provides a pathway to work as an instructor providing exercise instruction for group, aqua or gym programs.

They work independently with some level of autonomy in a controlled environment such as fitness, leisure, aquatic and community centres where risks are managed through pre-existing risk assessment and hazard control processes.

Individuals who specialise in Aqua Exercise Instruction deliver water-based exercise sessions designed for participation by a group of clients. Sessions may be freestyle, pre-choreographed or circuit style. They also have the skills to rescue a client in distress, and an appropriate level of pool deck fitness and endurance.

Individuals who specialise in Group Exercise Instruction deliver exercise sessions designed for participation by a group of clients with a mix of ages/fitness levels. Sessions may be freestyle, pre-choreographed or circuit style. These individuals instruct and demonstrate complete exercise sessions to groups with limited individual interaction.

Individuals who specialise in Gym Instruction provide individually tailored client assessments, provide technique correction as needed, and develop and demonstrate programs. They also provide supervision of a facility or service, keep equipment clean, tidy and well maintained, and handle various customer inquiries.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

You can expect to complete approximately 20 hours study per week. There are 4 x 7 hour face to face performance workshops to assist your successful completion of this course – locations will be arranged according to enrolment numbers.

STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

NSW HEALTH Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
- Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements;
- Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
- Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES
Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free if over 18) in line with the Office of Children’s Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. AGED CARE WORK Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a National Police Check. For further information visit the Australian Federal Police website and search for National Police Checks.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY During the practical CPR assessment you will be required to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR both on an infant and adult mannequin placed on the floor. This is the training package requirement and you should consider your ability to perform this assessment task before enrolling.

You will receive 324 hours of face to face delivery over 18 weeks. You will be expected to attend at least 30 hours of placement in the on-campus fitness facility as well as engage in private self-directed study, practice sessions, review and reflection activities for approximately eight hours per week to acheive the volume of learning of five hundred hours associated with a VET Certificate 3.
