Description: This qualification is for occupational outcomes in the Performance Horse industry. Job roles may include stable hand; stud hand; groom or strapper; farm hand; stock rider; or trail-ride assistant. The qualification applies to individuals who undertake routine activities under minimal supervision with responsibility for their own work.

The qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to work safely with horses, it requires handling, feeding, exercising and caring for horses including stable duties, fitting gear, ridden and non-ridden horse exercise, work, competition and transportation requirements.

This qualification encompasses riding and driving sectors of the performance horse industry.

No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

This course will give you the practical skills and underpinning knowledge to work in the Performance Horse industry, care for performing horses and prepare them for competition, breeding or sale with minimum supervision.

This is a one year full-time blended course. This equates to approximately 15 hours of study and assessment completion per week with an additional 5 hours of of additional learning including assignment preparation, private study and research. It is suggested that students undertaking this course study approximately 5.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday however the flexibility of online/blended delivery allows students to study anytime on any days from any location.

Students attending practical workshops are responsible for paying for their own transport, accommodation and meals. Student accommodation is available on campus. More details are provided during workshop information/registration sessions.

Students will be required to provide their own (PPE) Personel Protective Equipment.
PPE includes, Boots Cotton drill long trousers, cotton rich collar shirt, Gloves, Wide brim Hat, Reflective Vest.

Due to the blended delivery students can start at anytime. Practical workshops are conducted at the TAFE NSW Goulburn campus Equine centre. There are approximately four workshops per year running over three to four days. These are timetabled in advance. If students are unable to attend workshops to complete their practical, and they have industry experience and access to industry facilities, then there is the opportunity of remote practical assessment including submission of video. These options are granted on a one-on-one basis and subject to approval.

Payment Plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

About: This course is blended delivery, using online resources (Moodle) and sessions and face-to-face workshops at our Equine facilities at Yallah campus. This course will give you the practical skills and underpinning knowledge to work in the Performance Horse industry, care for performing horses and prepare them for competition, breeding or sale with minimum supervision.

This course provides participants with a range of knowledge and skills needed to perform the following functions associated with the role of groom/strapper/senior groom for performance horses:
- handle, feed, exercise, groom and care for horses
- work with a wide variety of horses of different sizes, features and temperaments
- work within workplace procedures and codes of practice within designated timeframes
- communicate effectively with supervisors and team members alike
- be capable of administering first aid to humans and to horses.

There are no entry requirments for this course.

Credit (or recognition) for modules/units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences. Please discuss this with the teaching section when you enrol.

Please ensure you bring writing materials and a USB stick with you and wear appropriate clothing including enclosed shoes, covered shoulders, hat and long pants.

Comments: Orientation will be held at TAFE NSW Yallah Campus room AF11 on Wednesday 30 January 2019 9.00am to 12.00pm, where your teacher will discuss your attendance and individual timetable with you.

The classes will be held Tuesday weekly from 1.00pm till 5.00pm at TAFE NSW Yallah campus (just up the road from Wollongong) in the Stable Block, Green Skills room.
