Description: This qualification may be used as a pathway for workforce entry as community services workers who provide a first point of contact and assist individuals in meeting their immediate needs. At this level, work takes place under direct, regular supervision within clearly defined guidelines.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY

If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency. 
Other requirements: WORK PLACEMENTS

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

1. NSW HEALTH

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
• Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements;
• Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
• Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

2. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

3. COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES

Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of Children’s Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. Visit:

4. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY During the practical CPR assessment you will be required to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR both on an infant and adult mannequin placed on the floor. This is the training package requirement and you should consider your ability to perform this assessment task before enrolling.

This criteria will determine your exact fee. Students who meet additional specified criteria, may be eligible for a concession fee or a fee exemption. In claiming the concession or exemption students will be required to supply the required evidence to support the claim in accord with the requirements of Smart and Skilled eligibility.

COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES
Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free if over 18) in line with the Office of Children’s Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. AGED CARE WORK Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a National Police Check. For further information visit the Australian Federal Police website and search for National Police Checks.

ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY During the practical CPR assessment you will be required to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR both on an infant and adult mannequin placed on the floor. Your teacher can be in one TAFE location, and you can join the class from another TAFE location using video conferencing equipment or a mobile device. You can also join in from a venue in a participating regional community. You will be able to see and talk to your teacher and other students as though they were in the room with you. You will also have access to support to meet your learning needs.

If you have previously studied a Community Services qualification at a lower course level or are currently working in the Community Services Industry, this is a great next step in your career. This qualification will extend your skills and increase your knowledge of the Industry. To complete this course, previous work experience in the Community Services Industry or previous related studies will assist your learning. However, there are no formal pre-requisites for this course.

Note: This course will be delivered as a connected learning class. This involves a virtual classroom where you will be connected to your teacher and your fellow peers utilising a digital platform such as Skype for Business (or a similar digital learning platform). You will receive support in developing your skills in using this learning platform. Your teachers will attend the campus to run a face to face workshop during the course duration. It will assist your learning if you have access to a device such as a laptop, however computers are available at your TAFE NSW Campus or your local library.
