Description: This qualification provides a trade outcome in bricklaying and blocklaying.

The qualification has core unit of competency requirements that cover common skills for the construction industry, as well as two specialist fields of work.

The construction industry strongly affirms that training and assessment leading to recognition of skills must be undertaken in a real or very closely simulated workplace environment and this qualification requires all units of competency to be delivered in this context.

Completion of the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (ASCC 2007) is required before entering a construction work site. Achievement of unit CPCCOHS1001A covers this requirement.

This course delivers the basic foundations and content for students to develop the skills and knowledge used in the building and construction industry, specialising in brick and blocklaying techniques.

You will learn about brick/block types, brick/block accessories, glues, brick/block patterns and cement mortars.

You will also learn how to lay bricks and blocks using different bonds, including laying of brickwork/blockwork for domestic, commercial, industrial and public buildings, as well as how to construct ornamental panels, arches and columns.

This course is for non-apprentices looking to gain skills, knowledge and a qualification in bricklaying and blocklaying. The course is self-paced up to a maximum of two years. The group is usually made up of labourers, people interested in a career change or bricklayers that have been working in industry but do not have formal qualifications.

Information and Interviews for this course will be held on Thursday the 24th of January at 10am in J Block, Block Bricklaying Workshop, TAFE NSW, Wollongong (Foleys Ln, North Wollongong NSW 2500)

This course is aimed at providing coursework and experience which will assist the stduents to gain an apprenticeship in the bricklaying industry. The units covered are the same as in the bricklaying trade course and so any completed units can be credited in the apprenticeship course if the student gains an apprenticeship.
