Description: A set of skills to equip individuals in hygienic practices and handling food safely during the storage, preparation, display, service, and disposal of food.

Pathways Information Achievement of this unit provides credit towards qualifications in tourism, travel, hospitality, events, holiday parks and resorts in the SIT Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Training Package.

Licensing/Regulatory Information Certification requirements apply at a state and territory level to individuals involved in food handling or supervision. Certification in some States relies on the achievement of SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety and SITXFSA002 Participate in safe food handling practices.

Food safety legislative and knowledge requirements may differ across borders. Those developing training to support the SITXFSA001 and SITXFSA002 units must consult the relevant state or territory food safety authority to determine any accreditation arrangements for courses, trainers and assessors. 
Entry requirements: There are no entry requirements for this qualification 
Career opportunities: This skill set is for food handling personnel or food safety supervisors working in tourism, hospitality and catering organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises, and smaller food preparation or bar areas.

Participants are required to have intermediate computer skills. This course is offered for candidates already working in the food industry and who may be nominated as a Food Safety Supervisor in a registered Food Business. Food Safety Supervisors are required to re-certify their qualification every 5 years.

This is a flexible delivery with theory delivered and assessed online and an Observation assessment session to be completed at a choice of selected campus locations - Nowra, Moruya, Wollongong or Bega. Participants are required to have intermediate computer skills.

This course is for new or exisiting workers in the food industry.

This course offering is designed for people who would like to pursue a career or already involved in the Hospitality Industry and food handling as well as those wishing to own their own food business. Food Act 2003 (NSW) requires certain food businesses in the NSW hospitality and retail food service sector to have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS). TAFE NSW reserves the right to cancel a course if there are insufficient numbers and will endeavour to give participants as much notice as possible.

About: This qualification provides you with the skills and knowledge to be competent as a qualified Food Safety Supervisor in the Hospitality Industry.
This short course contains nationally recognised unit of competency - SITXFSA001, SITXFSA002

Learners require intermediate computer skills and access to a commercial kitchen to complete this course succcessfully. Learners will be required to video themselves in some practical activities and may need to purchase food safety equipment not provided by their workplace eg probe thermometer. Learners who have not worked in food preparation activities before and who do not require the qualification to act as a Food Safety Supervisor should consider completing the SITSS00050 Food Handler course.

This course is offered by Connected Classroom. This is just like a regular classroom, but teachers and students use the latest video conferencing technologies. Your teacher can be in one TAFE location, and you can join the class from another TAFE location using video conferencing equipment or a mobile device. You can also join in from a venue in a participating regional community. You will be able to see and talk to your teacher and other students as though they were in the room with you. You will also have access to support to meet your learning needs.

Researching food safety would be an advantage prior to class commencment however; it is not mandatory.This is a one day face-to-face course. As well as the in-class component, 2 hours of directed pre-reading of student notes prior to attendance is recommended to enhance your learning experience.
