This course is for those want to work as an air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanic.

You will learn how to select components, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain refrigeration systems and equipment that apply to food storage and preservation, air conditioning and air distribution equipment in buildings and premises.

The Certificate III in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration qualification meets PART of the requirements for issue of a ’Qualified Supervisors Certificate -
Refrigeration and/or Air Conditioning’ issued by NSW Fair Trading, which permits the holder to work unsupervised on refrigeration and/or air-conditioning systems and associated electrical work and to directly supervise others undertaking this work. The course also includes regulatory requirements for purchasing and handling refrigerants.

Note: The Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Legislation Amendment Bill 2003 apply to this qualification. 
Entry requirements: There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

However, the Electrotechnology Training Package recommends typical language, literacy and numeracy skill levels needed to successfully complete each Competency Standard Unit undertaken within this qualification.

Learners should either be in relevant employment or have access to appropriate simulated workplace environments to achieve the completion requirements of this qualification. 
Learning pathways: Completion of this qualification, with appropriate elective units, can provide credit towards one of the following:
- Certificate IV in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Servicing;
- Certificate IV in Air-conditioning Systems Energy Management and Control;
- Certificate IV in Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Systems.

- Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Apprentices.
Target group: Apprentice 
Applying and enrolling: Before you can start an apprenticeship, you first need to find an employer in the industry you’re interested in that will support you through your studies. You and your employer should contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) and tell them you’re interested in studying at TAFE NSW.

The ANP will help you and your employer to complete a Training Contract. Once you have a Training Contract, we will help you, your employer and the ANP to complete a Training Plan Proposal. Once you have both these documents, the ANP will lodge them with State Training Services, who will provide further advice about next steps.

Fee explanatory text: **ADDITIONAL RESOURCES**

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

- Personal Protective Equipment - Students are required to provide and bring to each session appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which may include:
safety glasses, gloves, safety footwear, suitable clothing such as cotton drill work wear and other equipment (e.g. ear protection or respiratory masks) in line with industry requirements for their workplace or worksite.
Other information: **COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS**

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

- an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
- employed full time
- signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
- seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic after successful completion.

Work placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

- Workplace evidence reports supported and signed by your employer/supervisor whilst being employed as an apprentice.
